I’m so thankful for my mother.  She’s always been a constant source of love, support and encouragement.  Several words come to mind when I think of my mom: intelligent, caring, honest, talented, thoughtful, attractive and dependable.  Throughout the seasons of my life, mom has always been there for me.

In honor of Mother’s Day, here are some special quotes about mothers:

All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

Yes, Mother.  I can see you are flawed.  You have not hidden it.  That is your greatest gift to me.” ~ Alice Walker

An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy.” ~ Rudyard Kipling

A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them.” ~ Victor Hugo

The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” ~ Honore de Balzac

My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw.  All I am I owe to my mother.  I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” ~ George Washington

Happy Mother’s Day!

Sentimental Sunday: The Layfield’s Celebrating Easter in the 1950s

Felder Layfield & Family on Easter 1950 (my mom’s the oldest child in all the photos)

Layfield siblings on Easter 1953

My grandfather Felder getting ready to grill one Easter in the 1950s.  Back then he smoked cigars and pipes.  He later switched to chewing tobacco.  I always wished he’d stuck with a pipe since they have such a nice aroma.

Layfield siblings before church on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1958.  Their car was an Aqua 1952 Ford Station wagon.  My mom learned to drive with this vehicle.

I thought it would be fun to post a group of photos of my mother’s family celebrating Easter in the 1950s.  The kids changed so much in the span of eight years.

Happy Easter!

Wordless Wednesday: My Grandfather Felder & His Teacher, Ms. Howell

Robert Felder Layfield with his school teacher, Gertrude Howell, Circa 1924 in Girard, Russell County, Alabama

This is my maternal grandfather, Robert Felder Layfield with his school teacher Gertrude Howell, Circa 1924-1926.  I’m guessing he was probably between eight and ten years old and in the third or fourth grade.  The Layfield family lived in Girard, Russell County, Alabama.

Wordless Wednesday: Layfield Siblings at the Beach

Layfield Siblings with their second cousin, Susie Frank Hart about 1919 at Brunswick, Ga.

This is my maternal grandfather Felder Layfield (in front) and his older siblings Bill & Elizabeth with their second cousin, Susie Frank Hart about 1919.  The Layfield family lived in Brunswick, Georgia for several years (circa 1918-1921).  This is the only image of the family taken at the beach while they lived in Brunswick.  Like many people who live near the ocean, often the only time you go to the beach is when you have out-of-town company.

Sentimental Sunday: The Layfield Sisters

Sisters Sue & Ambert Layfield, Circa late 1920s

Sue & Ambert Layfield, Circa late 1920s

This is a photo of my great-aunts Sue & Ambert Layfield.  At some point this image was part of Ambert’s scrapbook and this is her handwriting identifying the two of them.

In October 2000, I visited my Aunt Sue to interview her about the Layfield family.  She related a story about how she and Ambert had to wash dishes after supper every night.   One night Sue washed while Ambert dried; with nine people in the family, it took a while to finish the dishes.  Sue noticed there was a never-ending stack of dishes to be washed and realized her sister was getting more dishes out of the cabinets for her to wash!

I’ve always enjoyed seeing photos of sisters, especially when they are children.  In the near future, I plan to post some adorable images of sisters I’ve found at Flickr.

Treasure Chest Thursday: My Grandmother’s 1950s Nativity Set

Nativity Set+.jpg

My maternal grandmother displayed this nativity set in her home every Christmas.  She bought it in the 1950s from a neighbor who made ceramics.

I always thought she was the prettiest angel!

Here I am on Christmas Day in 1967 with Baby Jesus.  When I visited my grandparents during the holidays, I headed straight to the nativity set to hold baby Jesus. He was my  favorite of the group.

The paint has faded on his face and head.  It probably didn’t help that I handled him so much as a child. But as you can see, he’s been well loved!

It’s amazing that her wings are still intact after all these years!

My grandmother always knew how special this nativity set was to me.  She gave it to me fifteen years ago and I’ve enjoyed displaying it.  It’s my most treasured Christmas possession and brings back many happy memories.

Do you have a special Christmas decoration or family heirloom that you display during the holidays?

Wordless Wednesday: The Layfield Siblings Visit Santa in 1948

Visiting-Santa-Claus-circa-1947-watermarked-668x1024 (418x640)

My mother and her brothers visited Santa in December 1948 at Kirvens Department Store in Columbus, Georgia.  She was six years old at the time and told me she was afraid of Santa.  My uncles were about four and two.

Santa was certainly dressed for the part, not only with his fake beard and hair, but eyebrows too!
