In September 2012, I did a Fashion Friday post entitled “Women of 1863″ and it’s been one of the most popular posts at The Bees Knees Daily.  This is another set of pictures taken by famous  Civil War photographer Mathew Brady.  The group of images was posted by the National Archives at Flickr Commons and dates between 1860-1865.

  1. Very elegant set of elegant ladies. It’s nice to see what they do with their hands. Mrs Manning and Roberts are a bit nervous, and miss Ogden (or Mr Brady) decided to try something different. I wonder about the color of the (darker) dresses (blue? red?).

Thanks! I’ve also wondered about the color of their dresses. I think navy or a dark red is a strong possibility for the darker dresses. Did you notice one of the women, Ms. Cowdres was looking into the camera? I remember you commented in the Sept. “Women of 1863″ post that you preferred this pose to the subjects looking off to the side. I do as well.
